I'm not sure if this is posted in the right place, but I think my niece may be able to see spirits. I've heard that this is fairly common among babies. I've heard a few things, such as the fact that they are new to the world so they are closer to the spiritual plane..if that makes sense. Sorry if this is a dumb question. But, what are your ideas/theories as to why this is?

that is a good theory... I know when my now 6 year old was a baby, she would always be "talking" or laughing at someone in the corner of the room, near the ceiling. As a parent, you KNOW when your child is just playing or really interacting with someone. A few times, something scared her. After she turned 2 things stopped until we moved to a new house last year. I have 4 kids (she is the youngest) and though they have all had experiences here, she has had the most. She has heard someone say her name and seen an apparition. I don't know if she is just more sensitive, or it is because she is just younger.

I think the the simplest explanation is the best...babies and young children haven't yet been convinced by adults that what they are doing is impossible, so they do it. Of course, there are degrees of sensitivity, but babies, young children and animals seem to tune into the unseen very easily, not knowing that they "can't."

new baby here and let me tell you once in awhile even at just over a month he does this stare thing -like he's looking at someone, logical side of me knows he's just learning to use his eyes and focus, but gotta tell you sometimes it is like he's looking at someone or something that noone can see but him I recall my other kids doing this too, my one daughter when she was around 4 used to talk about when she died before, on a bridge in a red car, and many weird things about an apparent life that she recalled that made us all stop and wonder, but she grew out of it once she started school --

I've noticed my 6 month grandson stare and either smile or laugh at something in the corner of my living room near the ceiling at my house. He's been doing that since he was about 4 months old. My daughter tells me he does the same when he's at home. I like to think that it's his guardian angel keeping a loving eye over him.

that is so weird paranormalskeptic...2 of my kids have talked about their past lives too when they were about 3 years old. My daughter saw a truck on the news one time and said, "that is like the truck when I died!" OMG, talk about a stop what you are doing and say "WHAT?!" moment... Then my son asked when we were going to go back to Johnna's house. I didnt know anyone with that name and had never even heard that name before. I asked him who he was talking about and he said, "YOU KNOW, the lady that lives down the road with all the kids." I had no clue what he was talking about. We didnt know anyone like that. He got very frustrated with me because I didnt know who he was talking about. dmarie, my daughter looked in the same place. Angels must like it there

My 8 month old niece will have a complete conversation with someone that isn't there. It obviously plays with her too because she'll smile or laugh. My mom has a pair of divining rods and she once used them while the baby was in the room. The baby just stared at the rods as my mom communicated with whatever my niece was talking to. It was neat.

When my oldest niece was 2-3, she had conversations with the unseen in her room. She didn't talk to the living much until she was 3. However, she had lengthy conversations with whomever she was interacting with. If you wanted to, you could pass that off as an imaginary friend.
What was more difficult to debunk was when she would come up with knowledge that nobody living had taught her. Colors were a big one. When you are teaching small children you stick to basic colors; red, green, yellow, etc. One day, she came down stairs in a sweatshirt. I asked her what color it was. She looked at it and said "Gold." Another day I asked her what color a barn we were driving by was and she told me "Maroon." Then there was the day we were in a fabric store and I asked her what color the material I was holding was and she told me "Chartreuse." She also appropriately identified the colors amber, hot pink, violet and teal. When I asked her who taught her those colors I'd get the same answer "Bob." I asked her if that was who she talked to in her room and she said "Yup." Bob also taught her to count from 11-50.
When she was 3 her family moved to a house they were having built. In the days prior to the move, she would get really upset if you mentioned the new house. I asked her why and she said "No Bob." Her parents and I told her that Bob could come if Bob wanted to. That night we heard her on the monitor telling Bob it was OK to come to the new house. Then there was silence and "Oh. OK Bob." The next day I asked her if Bob was coming to the new house and she said no. I asked her why not and she said "Mama tell Bob, Daddy tell Bob, Aunt Mimi tell Bob and Bob will come." We all had to go up to her room that night and tell Bob it was OK for him to come to the new house.
Here's the interesting twist. Her paternal grandfather (my father) went by "Poppy" and her maternal grandfather went by "Papa" and both of them died way before she was born. For a child who spoke 3 words when "Bob" appeared I can see "Bob" being her way of pronouncing either (or both) of those names.
Congrats on the new baby, Paranormalskeptic!

She is 18 and hasn't mentioned Bob since she was 4 nor does she remember him. However, she remembers the room and says she felt super safe and warm there.

I totally believe children can see things.
When my niece was 2, she was playing in her room. My sister and BIL lived in his parents old house, and my niece's room used to be their room. She was playing but kept looking under her crib and laughing. My sister asked what she was looking at and she said "Doggie". My sister turned white and said "Joes parents bed was there, and their dog died underneath it"
Another incident, after they had moved, and my niece was a little older (6-7). She had an 'imaginary friend' and she said her name was "Alba". Alba was my BIL's mothers name. She died while my sister was still dating him, so my niece wouldnt know her name or have met her. However, this one might be more easily 'debunked' because she MAY have overheard conversations where her name was mentioned, but she was not talked about frequently, as she and my BIL did not get along very well.

When my oldest daughter was around 2, she befriended a recessed ceiling light at my parents' house. My mom asked her why she always smiled and waved at it, and she told her that her friend floats on the ceiling there sometimes, and he likes the light on. (When she would go over, the first thing she would do is run and turn on the light.) Completely freaked my mom out! My daughter doesn't remember it very well now, but when asked she will just say that she thought it was her friend.
