I have a question. I should start by saying that I have never had a paranormal experience myself, however I believe there is just too much evidence now to say there isn't such a thing. So, I am now a believer, and watching Brian Harnois helped bring me to this point. I love his style! My question is this ...
I have heard paranormal investigators say, " ... he doesn't know he's dead ...". If a spirit has remained earth-bound and is going about his normal routine, not knowing he's dead, wouldn't this spirit become suspicious when his attempts to speak with people are either ignored or met with, "OMG! DID YOU HEAR THAT?!" The spirit may begin attempts at communication by speaking, thumping the walls, stomping, moving objects, etc., but at that point he would have to know something isn't normal and begin to at least suspect he's dead. I think? I'm wondering if a spirit may realize he's dead, but isn't ready to leave and continues on doing the things he needs/wants to do?

That's an interesting theory sassy! I've heard that many times, usually in the event of a residual haunting. A similar thought I've had is that some spirits seem to respond to Christian blessings/cleansing. Do you think this only works if the spirit had those beliefs at one time?

I'm wondering if a residual haunting can really be a spirit. People say it's just leftover energy that hasn't yet dispersed into the universe. Can energy be considered a spirit? There may not be anything there to wonder whether or not it's dead, it's just a repetitious energy pattern. I think. Maybe. LOL
I'm of the opinion that spirits will respond to any religious blessing or cleansing or prayer under 2 conditions ... if they choose to or if something forces them to. Underneath all the titles and clothing and beliefs and hatred, we're all created and watched over by the same God. It's humans that have assigned him different names, different appearances, different ideals, but it's one of those things the human experience isn't allowed to know the truth about.

Drat, Sassy...you gave my answer! And probably better than I could have.

I think, by definition, a residual haunting can NOT be a "spirit". It's a replay of energy stored in the fabric of a place/structure/area that replays itself over and over. No real spirit is there, it's just the "memory" of an event.

Go back to your basic science principals.....Energy never dies it only disapates. Therefore, if the human body is indeed comprised of energy and everything else, we have electrical impulses and a low radio frequency below the 80fm frequencies who's to say we aren't just like a radio signal broadcasting? ME PERSONALLY, when I die Im broadcasting on Live 105FM lol

But, a recorded radio transmission played back is not "live".
In the case of a residual haunting, the spirit of the person involved might very well hanging around, and engaged in an intelligent haunting of the area. Their energy might very well have lived on. In fact I think this is the case quite often.
But, the event in question (in my opinion) of a residual haunt is merely just that...a residual replay of stored energies. A reflection if you will of an energy that was once present.
It's just my theory, and it's probably like the rest of my theories...full of it. But in my opinion energies that have lived on (spirits) can interact with investigators, answer questions etc....while a residual recording of that energy has no intelligence or ability to interact at all.

AND...residual haunting are more frequent in areas with high limestone or quartz in the soil/rocks. That would make sense. Plus, there are accounts of residuals who continue to perform the same motions EVEN AFTER a building is torn down and replaced with something else, so one might see a residual climbing a flight of stairs that no longer exists. It seems to be, as has been stated, recorded somehow in the very materials of a building, or in the land itself. Only a memory of long ago.
Then the intelligent hauntings...those who are aware and interact. THOSE are the really interesting ones. Those are the ones we all hope to capture, a true "ghost," not just a shade of something past and gone.
However, there is one more phenomina that should be mentioned. Several accounts exist of people who have apparently stumbled across something far different than either of the above. I recall, especially, two women in an office building who took the elevator to the basement to retrieve something stored there. When the doors opened, they looked onto a scene of an operating room, circa the War Between the States, complete with surgeons, screaming patients, and big burly orderlies. One would THINK that this would be a strong residual (and indeed, the building was one that had been used as a hospital) EXCEPT that an orderly looked up, saw the women, and began to approach them. They managed to get the elevator door closed, and the elevator moving back up before he reached them. Is it possible that some places that have seen such strong emotion actually cause a warp in time, and that one can, if the conditions are just right, step back to what was?
Something to ponder...

You guys are making me think too much at this late hour That story about the ladies in the elevator reminds me of a story I read about visitors to Versailles. They really felt as if they were transported back in time. www.museumofhoaxes.com/versailles.htmlThey could have just made it all up, but I think it is interesting. Sometimes I think it is sort of like the movie "The Others".....that we are all just existing in two different times and somehow they just overlap or we can get a glimpse of them and they get one of us. Maybe they think we are the ghosts

ME PERSONALLY, when I die Im broadcasting on Live 105FM lol I don't put much weight in the theory that the body transmits a self sustaining EM field after death (I know, I'm in the minority . When this is researched by physics and biochemistry where the human body's 2 major energy systems after death are considered, biochemical energy doesn't dissipate, it aids in the process of decomposition. As far as the electrical energy that is transformed in the brain, that just ceases after death. Those neurotransmitters that play a part in the energy transformation for the living body are no longer active after death. Therefore, an EM field can no longer exist. But even when we are alive, our EM field is very low; the body can only generate between 10 and 100 millivolts and that would be in the ELF range compared with a radio wave which is in the high end frequency.

You Know I have always wondered about this myself, i use to hear about people crossing over only to continue doing what they did in life and if they ever realized that they were dead , i have also heard of people asking during investigations if they knew they were and on rare occasions get mad and still state that they are alive. i think most know they are but in the same token some do not i always wondered and still do glad to see i am not alone here !

I'd have to guess that if a person dies they are going to have a pretty good idea they are dead (if we do in fact go on after death).
My angle on the whole paranormal debate is more based on the idea of time slips and the point where two separate points in time can accidentally intersect. Perhaps spirits don't know they are dead because they aren't dead - just alive in another place in time that is interacting somehow with our own time/space location. Perhaps we are the ghosts for these folks? Hard to say, and unless some type of dialog can be reached that isn't contaminated in some way by modern influences and readily repeated we will never even have enough evidence to support this as a hypothesis.
