Like many others (is there something to this?), I had an odd experience as a child which I cannot explain and which I don't like to talk about. But here goes.
When I was 10, my family lived in East Boston by Orient Heights (at the foot of the hill with the large cross). One night I woke up to find a shadow figure crawling up on my bed. I sat up slightly, and it paused. I swear it looked right at me and this lasted several seconds. When I sat up shocked, it jumped off the bed and ran out my room. I followed it with my eyes and it just disappeared into the kitchen, which had a night light on.
The more I think about it, the more I think it could have been an after-image from a bad dream. But it seemed very real and the whole experience lasted a while with the integrity of the figure (it's blackness) intact until it left the room into the kitchen.
I also used to hear footsteps in the carpets at night, like someone dragging their feet slowly. It would go on for hours. Eventually, I grew comfortable with it and began to welcome it. My cousin didn't believe me, and so one night he slept over. As soon as the steps started, I woke him up so he could hear it. He did and I said 'ok, good night' and went back to sleep. We still talk about it to this day.
Recent research on my part reveals that the hill was part of the location for the (lesser-known) Battle of Chelsea Creek in 1775 (as part of the American Revolutionary War). The cross at the top of the hill serves as a memorial for those who died in the war (it still stands today).
Anyway, since then I've been interested in ghosts and the supernatural. I'd like to go back to the house to investigate or at least experience the footsteps again. I like to think that it was an old soldier standing guard to protect me. That still doesn't explain the figure climbing on the bed though, which remains a mystery to me.
Thanks for reading.
