Sometimes as paranormal investigators we are given opportunities that you would have to be crazy to pass up. This was one of those times. A while back we were contacted by a good friend of ours. (Shawn from Twilight Paranormal Investigations) We have worked with them in the past, and we were asked to join them at Octagon Hall. As time went by, twilight had to take on a different case, so we then were told that we could investigate this historic civil war museum ourselves.
On the day of the investigation. Rich, Tyler, Stacy, Liz, and I met up at Liz’s house at 11:15am. Stacy is a new researcher and investigator in training for Kentucky Paranormal Group. This will be her first investigation and a great opportunity to learn the ropes. It only took us about forty five minutes to get the suburban packed and ready begin our three and one half hour journey to Octagon Hall.
After we had reached our destination, we decided to grab a bite to eat before we begin to set up our equipment and start our investigation. We decided to go to a Subway Restaurant that was about five miles down the road, since that was the closest place for us to eat. A young employee began to make small talk with us as he and another employee made our orders. He became curious after noticing our shirts and asked what it is that we do. Rich began to explain to him what it is that we do, and that we were in town to investigate a near by property.
The Young employees eyes lit up and he began to talk about his own experience at the near by Octagon Hall. His friend’s family used to live then when it was still being used as a rental property. When they were younger he encountered something that would cause him to not want to stay the night there again. We then told him our intentions were to try to capture any evidence of the property having paranormal activity, and to stay the night in the same house that frightened him as a child. We stayed skeptical after listening to his story about feeling watched and witnessing objects being knocked off the mantle above the fireplace, but still could tell he was being honest with us.
After we finished eating we went back to Octagon Hall and began our tour of the building and surrounding property with the owner. It was astonishing! They had a carriage house, a summer kitchen, a slave quarters, as well as a slave cemetery, and family plot. After we set up all of our equipment and got settled in, we started our investigation. The night started off pretty slow for us. We had split into groups and had one group investigate the building, while the other group investigated the outside property. This went on for the first couple of hours. We took turns exhausting every method we could think of, and still not one of us had a single personal experience.
Inside the building, Rich and I decided to check out the library. We took a teddy bear that we sometimes use as a trigger object and we began an EVP session. Upon asking a few questions we heard what sounded like a little girls voice, but we were unable to make out what it said. Shortly after that we heard what sounded like wood soled boots walking up to the door of the library. We never heard anything walk away and after leaving the room, we did not see anything as well.
We decided to meet up with the other group and together we all decided we would all sit together for about an hour and just be quiet and see if we hear anything. After about a half hour of silence we heard some footsteps in the room above us. Rich and I walked into the hallway and as soon as we got about half way down there we heard the little girl again. It was an agonizing scream that not only sent a chill up my spine, but cause me to feel overwhelmingly sad. She screamed, “Mommmmyyyyy! Help me mommy! Mommy, help me! Help me! Mommy, help me!” The strangest part was that the scream seemed to come from every direction all at once. Within two minutes we heard the same horrific scream for help, but this time it came from the basement. Rich and I immediately ran down the steps. Being caught up in the moment I’m not sure what our intentions were. Could we have been trying to find the source of the shrill screams, or for a split second did we actually think we could save her? I’m still not 100% sure which one it was, but it truly was an emotional moment for everyone involved.
Feeling drained, we decided to go outside as a group to catch some fresh air and clear our minds. We all stayed out there for about 20 minutes or so while we left our gear rolling, but the anticipation to go back inside made it feel like an eternity. During the time we spent outside we decided to do another EVP session outside. This time we decided to whistle Dixie to see if we could get any sort of reaction to that song. Since it’s documented that General Breckenridge and an estimated 8,000 confederate soldiers camped out on this very property before battle, we figured it was worth a shot.
I had just happened to look in the house through the window on the back door, just in time to actually witness a light for one of the display cases full of civil war artifacts turn on. The lights for the display case were set up on a motion detector. No one was in the house at the time, so upon seeing this we decided to go inside and further investigate the artifact room and see if we could find anything unusual. Nothing was moved and we could not rule what could have caused it. Was it a mouse? Was the motion sensor faulty? Or was there a nosey resident walking around trying to figure out who’s intruding into their beautiful home? These thoughts all crossed my mind, along with about 10 other explanations, but I won’t waste your time debating the possible causes in a story that already has limited space.
Stacy, Rich, and I stayed on the main floor. Tyler and Liz went upstairs to do an EVP session in the attic. They were only up therefore a few minutes when we heard a loud boom from up above us. Stacy immediately called over the radio to see if everything was ok up there. We received no response from Tyler or Liz. We discovered moments later that the loud boom was Liz’s flashlight. She and Tyler came downstairs to explain why Liz dropped the flashlight. As Liz attempted to explain, she immediately fell into tears. “I saw her!” she said, as she wiped her eyes clear with her hands. She proceeded by telling the rest of us that as she held the ladder while Tyler climbed into the attic, that she looked over and saw a young girl a little over waist high with long brown hair standing at the top of the staircase. She also added that the little girl looked directly at her before turning around and making her way back down the stairs.
After searching the house for about an hour, with an arsenal of EMF detectors, digital cameras, digital voice recorders, and video cameras to try to find this little girl, we decided to try to catch another breath of fresh air. Outside we talked about our experiences and demonstrated our support for our colleague. Liz had experienced the same overwhelming feeling of sadness when she seen the little girl, that I too experienced when I heard her screaming for the help of her mother. We eventually decided to call it a night and prepare for our long drive back to the Greater Cincinnati area. This investigation not only left us with a lot of memories, and amazing personal experiences, but also left us with self fulfilling proof that a spirit is genuinely able to tap into your emotions.
